Petit \u00e0 petit ou par sauts\u00a0? Apr\u00e8s avoir for\u00e9 \u00e0 Tahiti, Pierre Deschamps et ses coll\u00e8gues du CEREGE (Universit\u00e9 d&rsquo;Aix-Marseille) et des Universit\u00e9s d&rsquo;Oxford et de Tokyo ont \u00e9tabli une nouvelle courbe des variations du niveau marin depuis la derni\u00e8re glaciation\u00a0: elle confirme qu&rsquo;une remont\u00e9e catastrophique du niveau des oc\u00e9ans a bien eu lieu il y a 14\u00a0500\u00a0ans.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement est not\u00e9 MWP-1A (de l&rsquo;anglais <em>Melt Water Pulse<\/em>). Pour le reconstituer, les chercheurs ont effectu\u00e9 37\u00a0forages dans le r\u00e9cif de Tahiti. Les coraux tropicaux vivant \u00e0 faible profondeur, ils constituent en effet d&rsquo;excellents indicateurs de l&rsquo;\u00e9volution au fil du temps du niveau de la surface de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an. P.Deschamps et ses coll\u00e8gues ont dat\u00e9 ces coraux en s&rsquo;appuyant sur la transformation radioactive de l&rsquo;uranium 234 en thorium 230, et montr\u00e9 qu&rsquo;entre 14\u00a0650 et 14\u00a0400\u00a0ans, une gigantesque d\u00e9b\u00e2cle glaciaire s&rsquo;est d\u00e9clench\u00e9e, qui a fait monter le niveau des oc\u00e9ans de 14 \u00e0 18 m\u00e8tres en moins de 350 ans, soit au minimum 4 m\u00e8tres par si\u00e8cle\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourlascience.fr\/e_img\/boutique\/tahiticarte1-web800.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"200\" height=\"107\" style=\"float: right;\" \/>Auparavant, deux sc\u00e9narios concouraient pour placer le MWP-1A dans l&rsquo;histoire du climat. Le premier d\u00e9coule d&rsquo;une reconstitution des niveaux marins obtenue \u00e0 partir des coraux de la Barbade, dans les Cara\u00efbes. Ces donn\u00e9es sugg\u00e9raient d&rsquo;une part que la d\u00e9b\u00e2cle s&rsquo;\u00e9tait d\u00e9clench\u00e9e plus de cinq si\u00e8cles plus tard, il y a 14\u00a0000\u00a0ans\u00a0; d&rsquo;autre part qu&rsquo;elle \u00e9tait surtout due \u00e0 la fonte des calottes de l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord, et tout particuli\u00e8rement de celle qui recouvrait le Nord de l&rsquo;Am\u00e9rique. Mais ce sc\u00e9nario a des faiblesses : les mod\u00e8les g\u00e9ophysiques indiquent par exemple que la fonte de la calotte nord-am\u00e9ricaine modifierait assez le champ gravitationnel terrestre pour que la mont\u00e9e des eaux soit inf\u00e9rieure de 40\u00a0pour cent \u00e0 la Barbade. Or les forages de Tahiti montrent le contraire\u00a0: la mont\u00e9e des eaux pendant le MWP-1A est comparable autour des deux \u00eeles. Cela renforce le second sc\u00e9nario, selon lequel les calottes antarctiques ont contribu\u00e9 au moins autant que la calotte nord-am\u00e9ricaine \u00e0 la d\u00e9b\u00e2cle du MWP-1A.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Or la nouvelle datation de cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement \u00e0 14\u00a0650\u00a0ans le fait co\u00efncider avec le B\u00f8lling, un \u00e9pisode de r\u00e9chauffement rapide de l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord. En revanche, dans la reconstitution des niveaux marins successifs r\u00e9alis\u00e9e \u00e0 la Barbade, le B\u00f8lling pr\u00e9c\u00e8de le d\u00e9clenchement du MWP-1A. Si la nouvelle datation est la bonne, seule une r\u00e9organisation de la circulation thermohaline (dont le <em>Gulf stream<\/em> est un exemple) expliquerait le r\u00e9chauffement dans l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord, puis la fonte des calottes nordiques. Cette hypoth\u00e8se ne sera cependant confirm\u00e9e que le jour o\u00f9 les preuves g\u00e9ologiques de la contribution de l&rsquo;Antarctique au MWP-1A auront \u00e9t\u00e9 obtenues sur le continent blanc, ce qui n&rsquo;est pas encore le cas.<\/p>\n<p>Seule chose s\u00fbre\u00a0: les calottes de glace ne r\u00e9agissent pas de fa\u00e7on lin\u00e9aire aux changement climatiques. La remont\u00e9e du niveau marin n&rsquo;est donc pas proportionnelle \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9vation de la temp\u00e9rature moyenne \u00e0 la surface de la Terre. L&rsquo;histoire r\u00e9crite du MWP-1A illustre au contraire l&rsquo;existence de puissants effets de seuil. Alors que l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 humaine fait grimper sensiblement la temp\u00e9rature moyenne de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, il faudrait donc se m\u00e9fier de possibles d\u00e9b\u00e2cles \u00e0 venir.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pourlascience.fr\/e_img\/boutique\/niveauoceans1-web400.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"200\" height=\"290\" style=\"vertical-align: middle;\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"info_photo\"><span class=\"credit\">P. En bas, les courbes de variations du niveau marin d\u00e9duites des enregistrements de la Barbade et de Tahiti. On voit que la p\u00e9riode chaude dite du B\u00f8lling enregistr\u00e9e dans les glaces co\u00efncide avec la remont\u00e9e rapide du niveau des mers, le MWP-1A, dont les coraux de Tahiti ont
