Perch\u00e9s en haut de falaises ou au sommet de pentes douces, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 250\u00a0m\u00e8tres \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur des terres, ils forment des empilements atteignant six m\u00e8tres de haut, s&rsquo;\u00e9tendant sur pr\u00e8s de 15 kilom\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ces \u00e9normes blocs de roche ont manifestement \u00e9t\u00e9 arrach\u00e9s aux falaises. Mais comment sont-ils arriv\u00e9s l\u00e0, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0\u00a040\u00a0m\u00e8tres au dessus du niveau de la mer\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Les chercheurs pensaient que les vagues des temp\u00eates ne sont pas assez puissantes pour transporter ces rochers aussi haut et aussi loin \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des terres. Seuls des raz-de-mar\u00e9es en seraient capables, mais il semble aussi peu probable que des tsunamis aient cr\u00e9\u00e9 ces alignements, qui \u00e9voquent la limite des mar\u00e9es sur les plages. Faute d&rsquo;une bonne compr\u00e9hension du comportement des vagues percutant des falaises abruptes, avec des effets de r\u00e9flexion et d\u2019amplification, il n\u2019est pas possible \u00e0 l&rsquo;heure actuelle de d\u00e9partager ces deux hypoth\u00e8ses par des simulations num\u00e9riques.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">R\u00f3nadh Cox et ses coll\u00e8gues du d\u00e9partement de g\u00e9osciences de Williams College aux \u00c9tats-Unis ont pourtant \u00e9cart\u00e9 l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se des raz-de-mar\u00e9es en surveillant le mouvement r\u00e9cent des blocs. En effet, le dernier tsunami r\u00e9pertori\u00e9 est celui provoqu\u00e9 par le tremblement de terre de Lisbonne, en 1755. Des relev\u00e9s photographiques pris entre\u00a02006 et\u00a02011, compar\u00e9s entre eux et \u00e0 des cartes topographiques tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cises du XIX<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, ont mis en \u00e9vidence des mouvements r\u00e9cents, post\u00e9rieurs au s\u00e9isme de\u00a01755. Une datation au carbone\u00a014 de restes de palourdes, <em>Hiatella arctica<\/em>, dans les fissures des rochers montre que les blocs les plus anciens ont environ 1\u00a0800\u00a0ans, tandis que les plus r\u00e9cents ont moins de 60\u00a0ans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pour R. Cox, si les raz-de-mar\u00e9es jouent un r\u00f4le dans l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion de la falaise et le transport des rochers, ils ne sont pas les seuls. Les temp\u00eates sur la c\u00f4te des \u00eeles d\u2019Aran sont probablement assez puissantes pour \u00eatre \u00e0 l\u2019origine des empilements observ\u00e9s. La configuration du rivage, qui plonge abruptement dans la mer, permettrait en particulier \u00e0 des vagues puissantes d\u2019approcher des c\u00f4tes sans \u00eatre
