In fine, le fr\u00eale chromosome Y, celui qui d\u00e9termine le sexe masculin, n\u2019est pas appel\u00e9 \u00e0 dispara\u00eetre. Dans un article paru dans Nature, David Page et son \u00e9quipe de Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tordent en effet le cou \u00e0 une rumeur qui courait outre-Atlantique depuis 2002. Depuis qu\u2019une biologiste australienne, Jennifer Graves, avait pr\u00e9dit, l\u00e0 encore dans Nature, la fin du chromosome Y. D\u2019ici 10 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, il devait en effet s\u2019\u00e9teindre et conduire \u00e0 l\u2019extinction pure et simple de l\u2019homme\u2026 et avec lui de l\u2019esp\u00e8ce humaine.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00ab Cette th\u00e9orie a n\u00e9anmoins toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s controvers\u00e9e, nuance Gabriel Marais du Laboratoire biom\u00e9trie et biologie \u00e9volutive de Lyon, car elle d\u00e9coule d\u2019un calcul simpliste. \u00bb Et d\u2019un constat lui bien r\u00e9el : le Y n\u2019est plus qu\u2019un moignon de chromosome. Alors qu\u2019il y a 150 \u00e0 300 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, il avait la m\u00eame taille que le X, il ne poss\u00e8de plus que 5 % de ses g\u00e8nes ancestraux. Son \u00e9tat de d\u00e9cr\u00e9pitude est tel que les scientifiques n\u2019ont pas h\u00e9sit\u00e9 \u00e0 le traiter de \u00ab d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00bb. D\u2019abord parce qu\u2019il ne contient plus qu\u2019une centaine de g\u00e8nes (contre 1098 pour le X) mais surtout parce qu\u2019il est bourr\u00e9 de s\u00e9quences d\u2019ADN transpos\u00e9es et r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es. Des s\u00e9quences qui sont \u00e0 la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique ce que le b\u00e9gaiement est \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9locution : une coquetterie inutile.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019origine du Y d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraphe\">\n<div class=\"content_paragraphe\">\n<div id=\"CorpsDeTexte_1248129172613\" class=\"textContent\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00ab <em>L\u2019\u00e9tat actuel de ce chromosome s\u2019explique par le fait qu\u2019au fil de l\u2019\u00e9volution, le Y a progressivement cess\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9changer des g\u00e8nes avec son homologue naturel, le chromosome X,<\/em> \u00bb continue le chercheur. Cet arr\u00eat de la recombinaison, qui s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 en cinq \u00e9tapes successives, a conduit \u00e0 un raccourcissement progressif du chromosome Y. \u00ab <em>Et pour cause : les r\u00e9gions du g\u00e9nome qui ne recombinent pas sont connues pour accumuler des mutations.<\/em> \u00bb Ce processus, que l\u2019on appelle l\u2019effet de Hill-Robertson, aboutit \u00e0 la d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence progressive des r\u00e9gions non recombinantes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mais chez les mammif\u00e8res, cet effet est accentu\u00e9 par le fait que les cellules sexuelles \u2013 celles qui donnent naissance aux spermatozo\u00efdes &#8211; subissent un bien plus grand nombre de divisions chez les m\u00e2les que chez les femelles. Le risque d\u2019accumuler des mutations en est d\u00e9multipli\u00e9. De fil en aiguille, ces deux ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes ont abouti \u00e0 la d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rescence du Y mais aussi au d\u00e9terminisme sexuel, le Y devenant n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 la spermatog\u00e9n\u00e8se et \u00e0 l\u2019apparition des caract\u00e8res sexuels secondaires.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraphe\">\n<div class=\"title\">Vers l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019une disparition<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">L\u2019histoire aurait pu s\u2019arr\u00eater l\u00e0\u2026 sauf que, comme l\u2019a fait remarqu\u00e9 Jennifer Graves, ces processus qui dans le pass\u00e9 ont sculpt\u00e9 le chromosome Y sont toujours \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre. Alors pourquoi imaginer que le chromosome Y cesse, comme \u00e7a, de se raccourcir ? La suite voudrait en effet qu\u2019\u00e0 force de se ratatiner, le chromosome Y finisse par \u00ab s\u2019autod\u00e9truire \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Logique mais inexact. Car d\u2019apr\u00e8s l\u2019article paru fin f\u00e9vrier, le chromosome Y est stabilis\u00e9. David Page et son \u00e9quipe ont s\u00e9quenc\u00e9 puis compar\u00e9 des portions de chromosomes Y de l\u2019homme et du macaque rh\u00e9sus, des esp\u00e8ces ayant eu un anc\u00eatre commun il y a 25 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, soit 5 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s la derni\u00e8re grande phase d\u2019arr\u00eat de la recombinaison du Y.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tout cela pour montrer que depuis 25 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es, ces portions d\u2019ADN ont tr\u00e8s peu boug\u00e9. En tout, sur la zone consid\u00e9r\u00e9e, celle qui d\u00e9termine le sexe masculin, le chromosome Y n\u2019aurait perdu qu\u2019un seul g\u00e8ne. Pour les chercheurs, le fait que ces g\u00e8nes soient hautement conserv\u00e9s au cours de l\u2019\u00e9volution prouvent qu\u2019ils sont sans doute n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 la survie de l\u2019individu et qu\u2019ils ne pouvaient plus dispara\u00eetre, f\u00fbt-ce sur des millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es d\u2019\u00e9volution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mitig\u00e9e quant \u00e0 la port\u00e9e de cette d\u00e9monstration, Jennifer Graves a affirm\u00e9 que ce r\u00e9sultat ne r\u00e9glait pas le sort du Y, ce dernier pouvant tr\u00e8s bien dispara\u00eetre si ces portions d\u2019ADN vitales \u00e9taient transplant\u00e9es sur d\u2019autres chromosomes. Souvent, femme varie\u2026 mais parfois, non.<\/p>\n<div class=\"title\" title=\"Point de rep\u00e8re\">La non r\u00e8gle du XY<\/div>\n<div id=\"contenuParagPlus_1248129172650\" class=\"contenuParagPlus\">\n<div class=\"content_paragraphe\">\n<div class=\"textContent\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dans le r\u00e8gne animal, le sexe n\u2019est pas toujours li\u00e9 \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sence de chromosomes X et Y. Loin de l\u00e0. Chez les tortues ou les crocodiles, le sexe est d\u00e9termin\u00e9 par la temp\u00e9rature d\u2019incubation des \u0153ufs. Chez les oiseaux, ce sont les femelles qui sont h\u00e9t\u00e9rogam\u00e9tiques et porteuses des chromosomes Z et W tandis que, chez la drosophile par exemple, c\u2019est le nombre de X qui d\u00e9termine le sexe.
